African Follow-up Video Update #2

When I (Allison) was in college, my “theme song” was a funny song called “Please Don’t Send Me to Africa.” The person sings that he will do anything the Lord wants, EXCEPT go to Africa! My three roommates had all lived overseas, and even though they survived (and even enjoyed!) the experience, I was still afraid to go. How would I survive that long of a plane ride? What if I got sick? What if I had to eat BUGS?

The Lord was extremely gracious to have my first overseas experience be Nairobi. It is very different from the States, but westernized enough to not have been a complete culture shock. All the things I feared would happen, didn’t- praise the Lord! I so much appreciate all your prayers for us, because I know it was only by His grace that we had such a good, fruitful trip.

I loved the experience of going overseas. It was amazing to meet new people and experience new things. The missionaries that we met with were some of the kindest people I’ve ever met. I am still in awe of how this group of almost 20 strangers instantly bonded and worked together like we’d known each other for years. And to participate in the meetings, knowing that the work we were doing that week would help meet deep needs that people have had for decades and could impact tens of millions – I was humbled and in awe.

The trip wasn’t all work though! When the week of meetings and discussions was over, we spent some time at the market, which is much different than here. Instead of things being priced, you talk with the seller and “barter” for a price that is agreeable to both. It was frustrating at times, but very refreshing to meet new people.

We ate dinner one night at “The Carnivore” – an amazing restaurant, not appealing to vegetarians, as you can imagine! Waiters come around with huge skewers of meat that they literally cut off with a huge knife right onto your plate! There was the standard beef and chicken, and some exotic meats that Eric tried like camel, crocodile and even ostrich! I bravely tried a little bite of ostrich – not bad! I was just glad to not have to eat all of it!
And finally, my favorite part was the safari! We and a couple of the other guys piled into a special tour bus (the top could open up so you could stand in the bus and look out). It wouldn’t be safe to have the side windows open because I guess sometimes the animals come right to the bus!

We saw so many things – ostrich, gazelle, impala, zebras and giraffe. I am used to upstate New York where you often have deer cross the road in front of you, but I never imagined having ZEBRA cross the road instead! Wow!

About halfway through the safari, we stopped and got out of the bus to take a hike to look for crocodiles and rhinoceros. To our surprise at the road in front of us, a giraffe began to cross. He stood and looked at us as we looked at him, what a majestic creature! At some point he must have signaled somehow to his family that is was safe because 5 came out of the tall grass and crossed the road. It was so amazing! (See the photo below)

We hiked with our group and a guide for about a mile in the fields along a little creek. Though we didn’t see any rhino, we saw a crocodile, and even some little monkeys! One got very close to Eric because he was eating a granola bar and he was hoping to share.

As we walked, the thought hit me, “I am here, walking through the wilds of Africa! WOW!” It was an incredible moment to realize that it doesn’t matter where I am, God is with me. He is my shield and protector, my strength and my king.

The Lord loves it when we take risks, and doesn’t ever give us more than we can handle. We may think we can’t handle what He’s given, but He knows us better than we know ourselves. And what we can’t handle, He will carry, if we let Him.

If you have ever thought about going on an overseas trip, I highly encourage it! To see what missions trip Jesus Film has available, check out their website at: www.jesusfilmmissiontrips.org.

Indian Follow-up Video

Things are progressing rapidly for the India follow-up video. When I met with the Indian staff in February, we decided that we would attempt to get the video completed in six months— we knew that this was a very ambitious goal, and would not be possible without God’s favor and assistance.

Well, it has been seven months and we are finally able to begin production. Finding a qualified Indian script writer and producer was a challenge, but thankfully the Lord has brought Susan Cherian to work with us.

She has completed the script and is in Mumbai (Bombay) India this week to begin selecting a production studio and actors for our video. I will be traveling to Mumbai later in the month, once the details are in place, to participate in the actual filming and directing of the video.

The Lord has also brought Paul and Robin Hardway to work with our team. They has been on Campus Crusade staff for several years, working with our Campus ministry. Paul has a heart to teach new believers and a wealth of experience in the film industry. I am excited about bringing Paul with me to India to be the creative director and insure that the video is as effective as possible.

Please continue to pray for wisdom for me as I focus on producing this project. It has been taking up most of my time lately, as many details need attention because we are so close to filming. Also, please pray for safety for travel—for Paul, Susan and I.

Below is a prayer calendar for the upcoming month. Please take a few minutes each day to lift up this project, our team and all the details that need to be sorted out. I need the Lord’s wisdom and guidance more than ever as I am making decisions daily that will directly impact the final product.
